not fishy

Not even thinking fishing this morning.
The seas are down to a near attempt of a lake ... but the occasional set comes in sort of. So I went out on the old Mal.
23 degrees in the calm water so warm that plenty of weed has arrived overnight ... a great band from the shore to about five meters out. Thick sand papery kelp that falls in love with your legs and wont take the hint. Not the place to hang out if you're anything. So paddling rather than swimming was the go... out back.
And then it pissed down rain. Big bouncy rain drops, no wind, here comes a set.
An easy ride then off ... amongst the weed.. but quickly back on the board and out for a few more. Very glad I'm not wearing a leg rope. Very dangerous in weed like this.
Rain stops and there's that salt water interpretation of an oily bath ... must be those ions.
Waves but no fish.

big swell

Where do all the little fishies go when there are 15ft waves ???
There's no birds diving anywhere. None of those tuck the wings in kamikaze dives from ridiculous heights. None of those slow take offs with a gut full to digest and an anxiety to get in the frantic unofficial cue for another dive on prey.
The boats don't go out ... they could but they do maintenance, catch up on sleep, sharpen hooks.
Bait doesn't sell in the shops but the shops become the market place for big sea stories ... the shops themselves become the bait for passionately and possibly lonely folk. Do they fish just to tell the story ?
The seagulls are on guard on the beach at stormwater overflows for easy grub pickings. Cawing and threatening each other in a territory protection that not even they are sure of. But their dad and mum did it so they do. Big grubs. Must have been a bank collapse somewhere. Change of menu. Then back to the take out chips scattered by holiday makers who enjoy the fierce competition for that warm fat soaked strip of spud.
The dolphins do another observation run by at slow cruise speed. They know where the feed is.

I forgot ...

... to get back to you.
Its been a while and do you know the snap of winter just didn't do it for the fishing bag.
But so long. I know what was I thinking ?
But do you know not a whiting for a year. Now mind you I'm not going any where for them ... they have to come to me.
Worms, everything, its all here and they won't come. I know they are just around the corner and down the beach a way but so what. I'm out the front.
But the Salmon have been big and I managed to land a 3kg one just two weeks ago. Talk about 'neighbours fish' ... they don't even go well in fish cakes! Any others are going back. But don't they give a great fight. I was using the light gear and it went off! Fun to land but not happy about the termination. Hunter not thinker.
Yesterday was good too! Outside with Russ to give the hull a run and not a real lot of action in the middle of the day so we had a troll on the way home and hooked a nice Kingfish at 660mm. Its always nice when its your first. Just what a good Laksa needed.
Its about learning and gazing and realising that there are no answers.
Just acknowledgment that it is a struggle, and then its not, and then it is.
Frozen beach worms are great and convenient.

old bag

Well they have all gone to see you. Not a mouth in site. Just a little flatty the other day and he jumped off before I had a chance to let him off. The worms are fine ... it must just be!
A new bit of info: to keep the worms going get an old bit of heshian (old bag) and wet it in the ocean then get some seaweed and roll the worms and the weed up together and store in the shadow of something.
There you go.

Its been good

Yesterday I got snapped off big time ... not sure by what.
Anyway I got some of this new graphite wire like tresse braid lead thingo. Works well and have landed with it. Nothing jumped off to date.
But the end of Autumn is nigh! The last evening past of hanging on to summer,
So what will winter bring. I'm looking forward to some big Tailor. Love em.
Sliced to the bone across the sides. Hot plate on high. Oil and butter on the plate, seasoning sprinkled on the fish both sides. 3 minutes a side and there you have one great taste.
One more worm left for the morning!
Keep an ear out.

Great Morning

Better now!
And a great morning for a little fishing ... Emphasis on little.
Four fish ashore before a keepable one in the bag. A nice 32cm whiting who decided that he had a major dislike for sand!
I took him on a plate to friends for their breakfast.
Great autumn down here.
And the worms ... long term keeping ... if you roll them in beach sand, wrap them in newspaper and freeze them they'll be ok for a long time. When you want to use them just give them an hour or two thawing, soak them in salt water for a little then bingo! Fresh live dead worms! Bobby told me that this morning on the beach. Thanks Bobby
Tight lines etc!
